Description

Created by the world-renowned Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, Sinfonia por el Perú (“Symphony for Peru) is committed to catalyzing social transformation through group music teaching. Modeled after Venezuela’s El Sistema, the program provides musical training for young people as a means of building life skills, artistic ability and the values of good citizenship in 17 teaching centres across 10 regions of Peru. Sinfonía por el Perú has achieved remarkable results, touring Europe to great acclaim in 2024.

The Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Choir has quickly risen to international prominence, making their Canadian debut after their first place win in the 2024 Summa Cum Laude Competition in Vienna. Their sparkling ensemble, vibrant Latin rhythms and harmonic mastery will captivate Toronto audiences.

The VOCA Chorus of Toronto is honoured to share the stage with the Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Choir to perform several remarkable works by renowned Cree composers Andrew Balfour and Sherryl Sewepagaham. VOCA is a dynamic, auditioned ensemble which performs a broad range of repertoire in collaboration with superb guest artists.

Performances, including community concerts, frequently feature premieres by Canadian composers, along with arrangements by VOCA’s artistic director Jenny Crober. Other members of their artistic staff include collaborative pianist Dakota Scott-Digout and several professional leads. Concert highlights include the 2018 Canadian premiere of Ola Gjeilo’s major choral work Dreamweaver, the 2022 world premiere of Andrew Balfour’s stunning Anang (A Star), and their 2023 Roy Thomson Hall debut.
