Description
Four in the Morning is a new multidisciplinary jazz-theatre work by award-winning Watermill alumnus HAUI™ (Howard J. Davis), exploring the revolutionary and controversial love affair between British heiress and activist Nancy Cunard and African American jazz musician Henry Crowder.
Set against the backdrop of Transatlantic Modernism, the piece traverses the Harlem Renaissance, the Négritude Movement, Prohibition, and global racial tensions. Told through fragments of memory, jazz, poetry, and visual storytelling, the work unfolds as both love letter and cautionary tale—examining the risks of crossing boundaries of race, gender, and class, while resonating with urgent conversations today.
Four in the Morning amplifies erased histories and celebrates diasporic voices through an immersive new form of performance. Developed through residencies at The Watermill Center (New York) and with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, the project now enters its next phase of workshop development toward its world premiere.
HAUI™ is an award-winning mixed-media artist known for directing, devising, and designing cross-disciplinary work for stage and screen. As noted by STIR magazine Vancouver, his art "defies categorization, much like the artist at its center.”
Over the past decade, HAUI™ has developed a diverse body of work that synthesizes theatre, dance, opera, film, and visual arts, exploring themes of race, gender, and sexual orientation, while bridging the gap between art and activism and shedding light on overlooked histories and forgotten narratives.
Food & Drink
Food and drink aren't permitted in the theatre. The exception is a show with a bar or concession running — when there is one, we'll say so on the event page.
